Kiwanis Sign Garden Bed
BVCA establishes garden in the Village
In 2009, the Kiwanis Club received permission to erect a sign at the intersection of Ireland and Oak streets, just east of County Line Road. At the same time, the Bay Village Civic Association was searching for a site to establish a garden in the Village of Amityville.
Kiwanis agreed on a proposal for the garden bed at the base of the sign to be donated and planted by the Bay Village Civic Association. Several design issues and hurdles were encountered prior to the implementation. This year's unusual Spring weather and Summer drought did not help.
However, with the assistance of Ed Batz and Batz Landscaping, it has come to fruition. A beautiful design was submitted. The Bay Village Civic Association purchased the plants, with some help from Kiwanis. Through the generosity of Batz Landscaping, the bed was prepared and large shrubs were planted. This included a blue spruce and several knock out roses and other perennials. Members of the BVCA Enhancement Committee, co-chaired by Jackie Aissa and Julie MacLean, will plant annuals in the bed next Spring. It’s a beautiful addition to the Village landscape.
This has been a wonderful collaboration and emblematic of the kind of partnerships that make Amityville such a special place. We all recognize the uniqueness of the Village and strive to enhance its beauty.

Cornstalks Placed at Park Avenue School
Enhancement Committee’s efforts keep the beds attractive and seasonal
The school day had ended on a sunny October afternoon. An afterschool program still occupied the Park Avenue School in Amityville. While the activity went on inside, other things were happening outside.
Members of the Bay Village Civic Association were tending the beds they created in front of the building. The most recent addition was cornstalks for the lamp posts. This was part of the Enhancement Committee’s efforts to keep the beds attractive and seasonal. Holiday lights and greenery will be attached in the winter.
As the children entered school the next day, they were excited to see the cornstalks remarked principal Scott Bullis. Passing visitors also admired the addition.
The Bay Village Civic Association represents the residents of the Village of Amityville. This effort was part of its continuing effort to preserve the charm and character of the Village. For more information, contact them at bay village civic at aol dot com.

Winners of Basket at Farmer’s Market Announced
Market ends on November 6 due to weather
Ampara Vega and her daughter, Violeta, were the lucky winners of a basket raffled on Saturday, October 23. The Bay Village Civic Association sold tickets for the basket at the Farmers’ Market in the Village of Amityville to help fund a scholarship. It will be awarded to an Amityville High School student. There was a great response from shoppers and vendors who helped make this a successful event.
The basket was a 'pie taker' basket, hand woven by BVCA member Jackie Boccio. Vendors from the Long Island Growers Market donated a wide array of products and gift certificates; including chicken, beef and eggs from Wildcraft Farms.
Due to the unusually cold weather, the Market ended on Saturday, November 6. It will return to the municipal parking lot in Amityville on the east side of Route 110, next to Cameta Camera, by June 2011.

Scholarship Awarded by Bay Village Civic Association
Gavin Kretz presented award at "Night of the Stars"
The Bay Village Civic Association was pleased to present a scholarship award to Gavin Kretz (pictured here with President of the Association, Joan Donnison). The award was given at the “Night of the Stars” senior awards ceremony on June 3, 2010.
An Amityville Memorial H.S. Senior, Gavin was chosen to receive this scholarship by the BVCA Board based on the quality of his student achievements and his community service record. He has volunteered in a soup kitchen, served as a summer baseball camp facilitator, a peer mediator, and an Awareness Weekend facilitator.
He was the starting quarterback of the football team for two years and served for three years as the varsity baseball captain while attaining a grade of 90 or above for every semester.
The Bay Village Civic Association congratulates Gavin Kretz on this award and wishes him well in his future at Towson University where he intends to pursue a career in special education.
